OPG reduces inspection time by more than 7 days.
Over the last few years, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has developed various advanced phased array techniques using Zetec phased array equipment and data analysis software. These techniques allow reliable crack detection and sizing in the turbine blade dovetail without removing the blades. The fact that the blades remain in place and do not need to be re-installed, or the turbine re-balanced, saves considerable time during the outage.
Due to the complex geometry of the parts, the examination technique uses software simulation tools. The simulations enable OPG to determine probe manufacturing parameters as well as software control parameters for the inspection. Recently, OPG engineers called on Zetec's Applications group to integrate a new custom mechanical scanner engineered to OPG specifications. After several inspections, OPG reports that it has successfully reduced inspection time by more than seven days from critical path.
