Crack detection in feeder bends
Zetec’s Bend Cracking Crawler (BCC) is a fully automated dual-axis scanner designed to detect cracks in first and second feeder bends. Based on conventional UT technology, the system inspects the full circumference of feeder to locate and size axial OD and ID connected cracks. The BCC can be driven up to 20 feet away by a single operator and is controlled using Zetec’s motor control unit (ZMC2™). The solution is optimized for outside diameters of 2.0″ and 2.5″ and has been successfully deployed on several occasions in different CANDU Power plants.
UT data on hundreds of real specimens were recorded over the years and actual cracks have been found, thus proving the efficiency of the technique. Installation of the scanner on a pipe takes less than 30 seconds. The increased inspection rate allowed saving precious time in outages schedules and important reduction of radiation doses for operators.
